Normally heard as a single sound, occasionally a narrow split
Heard during the onset of systole
Due to closure of the mitral and tricuspid valve
Loud S1 : pregnancy, anemia, anxiety, thyrotoxicosis, mitral stenosis
Soft S1 : heart failure, mitral regurgitation
